Richard “White Boy” White Releases Long-Awaited Third Studio Album and Book
‘Undivided Intention’ features notable guest artists and will be released on July 11 as a combined album and book.
(TARRAGONA) Richard “White Boy” White is an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter based in Tarragona, known for his unique blend of Piedmont fingerstyle, Delta, and Memphis blues with a dash of Swing.
From his humble beginnings in the small cafés and listening rooms of his hometown Philadelphia, he toured solo through Europe, before returning to the states to study with the master of the eight-string classical guitar, David Harris. Over the years, White has shared stages and licks with world-class musicians.
In 2013 and 2016, he released two albums to critical acclaim, before dedicating himself almost exclusively to playing live, founding and running the Tarragona Blues Festival, and organizing the highly successful “Secrets en Acustics” concert series in Studio 23 with his brother J.J. White.
Now, in 2024, Richard is back with his long-awaited, third full-length release, Undivided Intention. In an age of singles, Richard offers a slow-cooked album filled with humor, sorrow, irony, fun, satire, social commentary, and, as with all great blues records, at least a few drops of bourbon, and a touch of madness.
In tandem with the release of the album, White will release a book filled with photos and text that detail the behind-the-scenes process of a record that was eight years in the making.
With evocative titles such as “Left-Handed Sister,” “We are All Addicted to Something,” “The Man Within,” and of course the title track, White’s songs are quirky, real, and true to the spirit of the blues without being derivative. He manages to sound classic and original all at once — a claim made by many but achieved by few — thanks to his organic approach to songwriting, arranging, and performing.
Richard White doesn’t look for perfection, he looks for the perfect way to tell a story; it’s thanks to this authentic approach that his steady stream of fans keeps growing. And while he’s a Philadelphia-bred bluesman to the core, his time living and playing in various places around the world — from Amsterdam to New Orleans, and from Bergen, Norway to Tarragona — has given him an eclectic edge, a willingness to push boundaries that you won’t hear on your average blues recording.
In the end, White’s musical idiosyncrasies are his greatest strength. You don’t listen to a White Boy White album and shrug your shoulders. You either love it, or you hate it. Again, as with all great records throughout music history.
Recorded partly at home and partly in the studio, Undivided Intention is filled with characters, each with his or her personality, each with a story to tell. The other musicians who collaborated on the album — Norman Pena on guitar, Oleg Valazquez on bass, Viktor Sytnik on drums, Bert Deivert on lap steel and mandolin, that illusive character and multi-instrumentalist Ben Jugat — add their particular spice and flavor to the mix, and the guest artists are given ample opportunity to shine. And shine they do, no pun intended, as in the case of backing vocalists Carroline Shines and Noemie Delavennat, or trumpet player Xavi de la Salud, keyboardist Joe Broadhurst, and cellist Pau de la Nut.
The album Undivided Intention was co-produced by Chicago-born singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Tori Sparks, who honed her studio skills in Nashville and Barcelona. Her expertise and experience has been key to injecting the project with a youthful, playful vibe, and helping Richard’s artistic brilliance glow that much brighter.
Ten of the thirteen songs on Undivided Intention are original compositions, while the other three are carefully chosen — a traditional blues tune, and songs by Leroy Cardwell and Mitchell Parish/Heinz Roemheld — covers that fit so perfectly with Richard’s particular style that you’d think he wrote them himself. Which, as Salva “Potablavablues” Martinez (Director of Crossroads Blues Radio) points out, showcases yet another of Richard’s strengths: his compositional ability. While his fans will recognize White’s fingerpicking guitar and banjo playing, and his quirky vocal stylings, the songs themselves demonstrate just how much White has grown as a songwriter over the years.
In the words of music historian Ramon del Solo: “In the world of blues, it’s not very common to find performers who, while maintaining respect for the tradition and history of the genre, are able to innovate and give a contemporary touch to their recordings.”
Or to put it another way “Today is your lucky day. You have in your hands a collection of songs that you will listen to many times.”
If you ask Richard about his passion for the blues, he could talk for hours. But if you ask him what’s the key to his craft, he could deliver an equally long sermon about how much he loves and values his people: his musicians, his friends, his wife Pili, and how this unique album wouldn’t have been possible without them.
White Boy White will officially present Undivided Intention in a series of concerts, dates to be announced.
